Why are menstrual cramps so painful?

Menstrual cramps are caused by the uterine contractions that occur as a response to prostaglandins and other chemicals in our body. And this cramping sensation that we feel is more intensified when clots of bloody tissues from the lining of the uterus pass through the cervix and the pain is more intense if your cervical canal is narrow. There are some cramps that are more painful than another and the reason can be related to a woman’s prostaglandin levels. Women with menstrual cramps have high levels of prostaglandins in the uterine lining or endometrium compared to women who do not experience cramps.
