The Importance of Getting a HPV Vaccine

null

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is an effective prevention for young girls/women getting infected with certain types of human papillomavirus. HPVs are also associated with the development of certain cancer types (cervical, anal, vulvar, vaginal), as well as genital warts.

There are two HPV vaccines offered on the market, Gardasil and Cervarix. While both vaccines protect against two HPV types which cause cervical cancer, and other genital cancers, Gardasil also provides protection from two types of HPV types that cause genital warts. While the vaccine will last along time, but since it doesn’t protect against all types of HPV, a regular PAP smear screening is recommended after vaccination.

The HPV vaccine is recommended for girls as young as 9-10 years old, before they become sexually active. It is important that girls or women (except those pregnant) get all the three doses of the vaccine to ensure protection from the HPVs.
